AACHEN – Unbemerkt von der Weltöffentlichkeit bahnt sich an der Ostküste Sri Lankas eine humanitäre Katastrophe an, weil sich dort Zehntausende von Menschen auf der Flucht vor dem eskalierenden Bürgerkrieg befinden. Das berichtete das “Bündnis Entwicklung hilft”, ein Zusammenschluss der Hilfswerke Brot für die Welt, Deutsche Welthungerhilfe, medico international, MISEREOR und terre des hommes, am Dienstag in Aachen. Die Kämpfe zwischen der srilankischen Armee, den Rebellen der LTTE und der von ihnen abgespaltenen Karuna-Gruppe sind außer Kontrolle geraten.
Fast 160.000 Menschen suchen seit zwei Wochen in der Stadt Batticaloa Schutz. Mehr als die Hälfte von ihnen campiert auf Straßen, Plätzen oder freiem Feld. Viele hungern und haben keine medizinische Versorgung. “Die internationale Gemeinschaft muss endlich etwas gegen diese absehbare Katastrophe unternehmen und Druck auf die Regierung Sri Lankas ausüben”, forderte der Südasien-Koordinator von medico international, Thomas Seibert, im Namen des Bündnisses.
