GENF – (ÖRK) Der Ökumenische Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) fordert erneut einen Waffenstillstand im Gazastreifen und ruft die Christinnen und Christen in der Welt auf für Frieden zu beten und sich durch ihre Regierungen für einen gerechten Frieden in Israel und Palästina einzusetzen.
In einer Botschaft an die ÖRK-Mitgliedskirchen im Nahen Osten, die auch an die anderen Mitgliedskirchen weltweit gesandt wurde, rief der ÖRK-Generalsekretär Dr. Samuel Kobia am 7. FRANKFURT (mennonews.de) – Auf der heutigen Pressekonferenz in Frankfurt/Main stellte der US-Deserteur André Shepherd der deutschen Öffentlichkeit seinen Asylantrag vor. Er hatte den Antrag am Tag zuvor als erster US-Deserteur des Irakkrieges beim Bundesamt für Migration gestellt. Die Pressekonferenz wurde ausgerichtet von der in Bammental ansässigen Beratungsstelle für US-SoldatInnen, dem Military Counseling Network das zum Deutschen Mennonitischen Friedenskomitee gehört und dem Kriegsdienstverweigerungsnetzwerk Connection e.V.
André Shepherd war als Mechaniker für die Kampfhubschrauber Apache in Katterbach (Bayern) stationiert. Ein halbes Jahr lang wurde er 2004 und 2005 in der Nähe von Tikrit im Irak eingesetzt. Vor einer erneuten Verlegung im Jahre 2007 entschloss er sich, die Armee unerlaubt zu verlassen, da er sich bis dahin ausführlich über den Kriegseinsatz informiert hatte. “Als ich las und hörte, wie Menschen von den Maschinengewehren zerfetzt oder von den Hellfire-Raketen regelrecht in Stücke gerissen wurden, und erfuhr, wie Gebäude und Infrastruktur zerstört wurden, begann ich mich zu schämen für das, was ich da tat. Es war ein widerliches Gefühl, mir eingestehen zu müssen, dass ich im Grunde Tag für Tag am Abschlachten von stolzen Menschen beteiligt war.” (weiterlesen…)

AUGSBURG – Gewalt zu überwinden sei eine Grundaufgabe der christlichen Kirche, sagte der Vorsitzende des Rates der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland (EKD), Bischof Wolfgang Huber, beim Festakt in Augsburg, bei dem der Religionspädagogin Elisabeth Naurath der Hanna-Jursch-Preis überreicht wurde. Der Hanna-Jursch-Preis wird alle zwei Jahre vom Rat der EKD für herausragende theologische Forschungsarbeiten aus der Perspektive von Frauen vergeben. In diesem Jahr hat der Rat der EKD den mit 5.000 Euro dotierten Preis der Osnabrücker Theologin Professorin Elisabeth Naurath zugesprochen. Sie erhält den Preis für ihre Habilitationsschrift „Mit Gefühl gegen Gewalt. Mitgefühl als Schlüssel ethischer Bildung in der Religionspädagogik“. In seiner Festrede spürte der Vorsitzende des Rates der EKD, Bischof Wolfgang Huber, der Frage nach, inwieweit die Überwindung von Gewalt eine Grundaufgabe der Kirche sei.

BAMMENTAL – In der Nacht vom 19. auf den 20.3.2003 feuerten die USA 40 Marschflugkörper auf den Irak ab. Ziel war nach Angaben der Amerikaner ein Aufenthaltsort Saddam Husseins. Damit begann der Angriffskrieg der USA auf den Irak. Keiner der öffentlich genannten Kriegsgründe war stichhaltig. Vielmehr sind die schlimmsten Befürchtungen der Kriegsgegner eingetroffen, was die Destabilisierung des Nahen Ostens, die Missachtung von Menschenrechten, die Zahl militärischer und ziviler Opfer, die Kriegskosten betrifft.
Im Januar 2003 trafen sich Vertreter von “Connection e.V.”, “Stop the War Brigade” und “Deutschem Mennonitischen Friedenskomitee”, um angesichts der wachsenden Kriegsdrohungen die Lage zu beraten. Es ging besonders um die Frage, wie dem zu erwartenden Beratungsbedarf von US-Soldaten, die aus dem Militär aussteigen wollten, sinnvoll begegnet werden sollte. So wurde Military Counseling Network (MCN) neu gegründet. MCN hat in inzwischen fünf Jahren hunderte von Soldaten beraten und einigen Dutzend den Ausstieg ermöglicht.

BERLIN – (APD) Gegen mehr Kampftruppen der Bundeswehr in Afghanistan hat sich die Vereinigung Evangelischer Freikirchen (VEF) und das Mennonitische Friedenszentrum Berlin gewandt. In einem offenen Brief an die deutsche Bundesregierung und die Abgeordneten des Deutschen Bundestages vertreten der VEF-Beauftragte am Sitz der Bundesregierung, Pastor Peter Jörgensen, und die Leiterin des Friedenszentrums, Pastorin Martina Basso, die Ansicht, dass die Not der Menschen in Afghanistan durch das militärische Eingreifen der NATO nicht gelindert worden sei. Der zivilgesellschaftliche Aufbau gelinge nur in ganz vereinzelten Ansätzen und das Vertrauen der Menschen schwinde zusehends. “Die Aufstockung von Kampfverbänden führt nicht dazu, den Menschen eine wirtschaftliche Perspektive zu bieten.” Ohne diese Perspektive werde es schier unmöglich für die Dorfältesten und Stammesführer, junge Männer davon abzuhalten, sich unter anderem in Pakistan zu Taliban-Kämpfern ausbilden zu lassen.
“In einem Land, das jahrzehntelang von Gewalt und Krieg erschüttert wurde, ist eine nochmalige Erhöhung der Truppenstärke und Waffenarsenale kontraproduktiv, weil es keine schnelle Gewalt-Lösung geben kann”, betonen Jörgensen und Basso. Vielmehr werde die Gewaltspirale weiter hochgeschraubt, so dass sie “in ähnliche Ausweglosigkeiten wie im Irak” führen könne. Die Verfasser es offenen Briefes begrüssten, dass Verteidigungsminister Franz Josef Jung (CDU) die Forderung zurückgewiesen hat, Bundeswehreinheiten zu Kampfeinsätzen in den Süden Afghanistans zu schicken. Sie bitten die Bundesregierung, bei diesem Nein zu bleiben und die Anfrage der NATO nach zusätzlichen Kampftruppen abzulehnen. Notwendig sei eine Überprüfung des bisherigen Afghanistan-Engagements und die Verlagerung der Aktivitäten auf die zivile Konfliktbearbeitung.
