KAIRO – Ein Besucher-Team aus dem Genfer Sekretariat des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) hatte die Ehre, am Samstag, dem 8. Januar 2011, in Kairo (Ägypten) von Papst Shenouda III. von der Koptischen Orthodoxen Kirche empfangen zu werden. Pastor Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, der Generalsekretär des ÖRK, reiste mit der Gruppe nach Kairo, um das Beileid der ökumenischen Gemeinschaft nach dem tödlichen Bombenangriff, der am Neujahrstag eine Kirche in Alexandria getroffen hatte, persönlich zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Tveit übermittelte Papst Shenouda das Mitgefühl und die Unterstützung der ÖRK-Mitgliedskirchen in dieser für Ägypten so schwierigen Zeit. Er versicherte, die Gemeinschaft der Kirchen, die gemeinsam den ÖRK bildeten, sei im Gebet für die Koptische Orthodoxe Kirche und das ganze ägyptische Volk vereint. Der ÖRK-Generalsekretär bezeichnete das Kreuz als Symbol der Solidarität, das Christen in aller Welt miteinander teilten. „Das Kreuz erinnert uns immer wieder an das Leid im menschlichen Leben und an Christi Tod am Kreuz, aber als christliches Symbol weist es auch auf die Auferstehung, auf Versöhnung und Frieden hin“, erklärte Tveit.
