GENF – (APD) Nach einem Unterbruch von mehr als zwanzig Jahren werden die Vorbereitungen für ein Panorthodoxes Konzil wieder aufgenommen. Das Ökumenische Patriarchat von Konstantinopel wird vom 6. bis 13. Juni im Orthodoxen Zentrum des Ökumenischen Patriarchats in Chambesy bei Genf eine vorkonziliare panorthodoxe Konferenz abhalten.
Die Vorbereitungen für ein panorthodoxes Konzil, in orthodoxen Kreisen auch “Heiliges und Grosses Konzil der Orthodoxie” genannt, begannen bereits in den siebziger Jahren, wurden jedoch in den neunziger Jahren wieder ausgesetzt. Die dritte und bislang letzte Konferenz dieser Art fand 1986 ebenfalls im schweizerischen Chambesy statt.
Hauptursache für die lange Unterbrechung ist die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen den orthodoxen Patriarchaten von Moskau und Konstantinopel, bei denen es vor allem um die jurisdiktionelle Zugehörigkeit der orthodoxen Landeskirchen in einzelnen Nachfolgestaaten der Sowjetunion wie Estland oder der Ukraine ging. Erst im Oktober 2008 machte ein Treffen aller orthodoxen Kirchenoberhäupter in Istanbul den Weg frei für die Wiederaufnahme der Vorbereitungen für ein gesamtorthodoxes Konzil. Dieses Konzil sollte – ähnlich wie das Zweite Vatikanische Konzil für den Bereich der römisch-katholischen Kirche – auch in der Orthodoxie ein “Aggiornamento”, eine “Verheutigung” des kirchlichen Lebens herbeiführen. Eines der heikelsten Probleme ist dabei die Organisation des kirchlichen Lebens in der heute weltweiten orthodoxen Diaspora.
Die orthodoxen Kirchen verstehen sich als die ursprüngliche christliche Kirche, von der sich alle übrigen Kirchen im Laufe der Geschichte abgespalten bzw. entfernt haben, so auch die römisch-katholische Kirche. Daher verstehen sich die orthodoxen Kirchen auch als geistliche Heimat aller Christen in ihren jeweiligen Gebieten und sehen mit Befremden auf die zahlreichen evangelischen Konfessionen, insbesondere, wenn diese auf dem eigenen Gebiet Parallelkirchen eröffnen. Auch für die Errichtung von papsttreuen Parallelkirchen (Unierte Kirchen) und neuerdings von (lateinischen) katholischen Bistümern in orthodoxen Ländern herrscht wenig Verständnis. Vor allem die russisch-orthodoxe Kirche verteidigt ihr kanonisches Territorium und wirft der römisch-katholischen Kirche Proselytismus vor. Aus katholischer Perspektive gesehen wird hingegen auf Anhänger der römischen Kirche Druck ausgeübt, damit sie sich der Orthodoxie zuwenden.
Die orthodoxen Kirchen betonen den Wert der Einheit des Christentums, fast alle von ihnen haben sich dem Ökumenischen Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) angeschlossen und führen einen ökumenischen Dialog zwecks Annäherung mit der römisch-katholischen, den altkatholischen, den anglikanischen, und den anderen orientalischen Kirchen. Sie lehnen es andererseits ab, sich durch Mehrheitsbeschluss Werte und Praktiken aufzwingen zu lassen, die nicht ihren Traditionen entsprechen (beispielsweise von einer Priesterin geleiteter Gemeinschaftsgottesdienst, gemeinsame Eucharistie, inklusive Sprache in Liturgie, Befreiungstheologie).
