MOSKAU – (APD) Fast zwei Monate nach dem Tod von Patriarch Alexij II. hat ein Kirchenkonzil der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche am 27. Januar in der Moskauer Christus-Erlöser-Kathedrale den Metropoliten Kyrill von Smolensk und Kaliningrad zum neuen Patriarchen, Kyrill I. von Moskau und ganz Russland, gewählt. Die Glocken der Christus-Erlöser-Kathedrale gaben die Wahl des neuen Patriarchen mit 16 schweren Glockenschlägen bekannt.
Auf den 62-jährigen Metropoliten entfielen bei der geheimen Abstimmung im Landeskonzil, bestehend aus Bischöfen, Geistlichen und Laien, 508 Stimmen. Gegenkandidat Kliment kam auf 169 Stimmen. Der zunächst vom Bischofskonzil nominierte Metropolit Filaret hatte vor der Wahl zugunsten Kyrills verzichtet. Nach dem Kyrill die Wahl angenommen hatte, erhielt den Stab des Patriarchen überreicht und legte die Kleidung des Patriarchen an. Das Konzil erhob sich mit Psalmengesängen und feierte die Neuwahl mit einem Dankgottesdienst.
Kyrill betonte, dass der Patriarch ein schweres Kreuz zu tragen habe. “Ich nehme aus Ihren Händen diese Gnade Gottes an; ich bitte, meine menschlichen Schwächen zu verzeihen; ich bitte Sie um Ihre Hilfe beim Dienst für Gott. Beten Sie um Gottes Hilfe”, sagte das neue Kirchenoberhaupt.
Der neue Patriarch Kyrill I., mit bürgerlichem Namen Wladimir Michailowitsch Gundjajew, wurde am 20. November 1946 im damaligen Leningrad geboren. Nach dem Schulbesuch trat er in ein Priesterseminar ein, besuchte anschliessend die geistliche Akademie, die er mit Auszeichnung abschloss. Das Mönchsgelübde legte er 1969 ab und erhielt den Namen Kyrill. Schon ein Jahr später wurde er zum persönlichen Sekretär des Metropoliten von Leningrad ernannt. Seit 1970 lernte er als Vertreter russisch-orthodox-sowjetischer Jugendorganisationen die USA und verschiedene Länder Westeuropas kennen. Von 1971 bis 1974 amtierte er als Vertreter des Moskauer Patriarchats beim Ökumenischen Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) in Genf. In der Nachrüstungsdebatte in Westeuropa Anfang der 80er Jahre trat er als Kirchensprecher gegen das atomare Wettrüsten auf. Seit 1983 übernahm er ein Lehramt in der Moskauer Geistlichen Akademie. In der Phase der “Perestroika” von Michael Gorbatschow zählte Kyrill zu den Autoren des neuen russischen Gesetzes über Religionsfreiheit. 1988 wurde er Erzbischof, 1991 Metropolit. Seit November 1989 war Kyrill Leiter des Amtes für Aussenbeziehungen des Patriarchats und damit sozusagen “Aussenminister” der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche und damit gleichzeitig ständiges Mitglied des Heiligen Synod der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche. Nahezu zwei Jahrzehnte lang war Kyrill Leiter des Amtes für Aussenbeziehungen des Patriarchats und damit sozusagen “Aussenminister” der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche.
Russlands Staatspräsident Dmitrij Medwedjew bot Kyrill I. in einem Telefonat die weitere Zusammenarbeit zwischen Staat und Kirche beim Aufbau moralischer Werte in der Gesellschaft an. Medwedjew äusserte sich laut einer Präsidentensprecherin überzeugt, dass der Patriarch für ein gutes Auskommen zwischen den Religionen in Russland eintreten werde. Auch Ministerpräsident Wladimir Putin beglückwünschte Kyrill telefonisch.
Die Inthronisation des neuen Patriarchen von Moskau und ganz Russland, wie er offiziell heisst, fand am 1.Februar in der Christus-Erlöser-Kathedrale in Moskau statt. An der mehr als vierstündigen prunkvollen Feier nahmen auch Russlands Staatschef Dimitri Medwedjew und Ministerpräsident Wladimir Putin teil. Unter den zahlreichen internationale Kirchenvertretern waren der vatikanische Kurienkardinal Walter Kasper, der Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen, Samuel Kobia sowie der Generalsekretär der Konferenz Europäischer Kirchen (KEK), Colin Williams.
Der Russisch-Orthodoxen Kirche gehören mit 150 Millionen Mitgliedern mehr als die Hälfte der rund 250 Millionen orthodoxen Christen weltweit an. Schätzungsweise bekennen sich heute zwischen 70 und 80 Prozent der Russen zum orthodoxen Glauben.
