ATHEN – (APD) Der bisherige Metropolit von Theben, Erzbischof Hieronymos leitet künftig die orthodoxe Kirche Griechenlands. Der 70jährige wurde am 7. Februar in der griechischen Hauptstadt zum neuen Erzbischof von Athen und damit zum Oberhaupt der Orthodoxen Kirche von Griechenland gewählt. Er tritt die Nachfolge des am 28. Januar verstorbenen Erzbischof Christodoulos an.
Wie aus Athen verlautete, erhielt Hieronymos im zweiten Wahlgang 45 von 77 Stimmen. Das neue Kirchenoberhaupt gelte als offen und pflege gute Beziehungen zum Ökumenischen Patriarchat von Konstantinopel.
Die Entscheidung für den Metropoliten von Theben wird von Beobachtern als Überraschung gewertet. Schon im ersten Wahlgang erhielt Hieronymos den Angaben von Kathpress zufolge die meisten Stimmen. Kandidaten waren auch die Metropoliten von Sparta, Dimitriada und Thessaloniki. Er pflegt den Angaben zufolge gute Beziehungen zu Bartholomaios I., dem Ökumenischen Patriarchen von Konstantinopel. Christodoulos hatte hingegen mit dem Primas der Weltorthodoxie wiederholt Auseinandersetzungen. Zudem hat Hieronymos gute Beziehungen zu den deutschsprachigen Ländern. Er studierte u.a. in Graz und war 1977/78 am Ostkirchlichen Institut in Regensburg tätig.
Hieronymos Ioannis Liapis wurde am 30. März 1938 in Inofita in der Region Viotia geboren. Nach der Diakonen- und Priesterweihe 1967 übernahm der Theologe das Amt des Generalvikars der Metropolie von Theben und Levadia. Von 1978 bis 1981 war er erster Sekretär der Heiligen Synode der Kirche Griechenlands. Am 4. Oktober 1981 wurde er zum Metropoliten von Theben gewählt. Er gilt als volksnah und war schon Gegenkandidat von Christodoulos bei dessen Wahl zum Athener Erzbischof im Jahr 1998.
Der Heilige Synod als oberstes Leitungsgremium der Kirche hatte sich am Morgen des 7. Februar in der Athener Kathedrale zur Wahl versammelt. Nach der Entscheidung für Hieronymos wurde vor dem Gotteshaus ein Licht entzündet, vergleichbar dem weissen Rauch bei der Papstwahl in Rom. Zudem läuteten die Glocken der Kathedrale, um den Abschluss des Votums zu signalisieren. Die griechische Regierung gratulierte Hieronymos zu seiner Wahl.
Der Wiener griechisch-orthodoxe Metropolit Michael Staikos bezeichnete die Entscheidung des Heiligen Synods der orthodoxen Kirche Griechenlands für Erzbischof Hieronymos als neuen Athener Erzbischof gegenüber Kathpress als “sehr gute Wahl”. Staikos war ein Schüler von Hieronymos, als dieser Religionsprofessor am Athener Marienbrüder-Privatgymnasium war.
Erzbischof Hieronymos sei “ökumenisch aufgeschlossen”, betonte Staikos. Seine Haltung im Spektrum zwischen “progressiv” und “konservativ” sei eine “gemässigte”. “Ich bin zuversichtlich, dass er ein guter Leiter der Kirche von Griechenland wird. Auch die grosse Stimmenmehrheit, die er bekam, spricht dafür”, so der Wiener Metropolit.
