GENF – Die nächste globale christliche Missionskonferenz soll nach einer Empfehlung der Kommission für Weltmission und Evangelisation des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) Ende 2011 stattfinden. Der Kommission, die im Anschluss an die ÖRK-Vollversammlung im Februar 2006 in Porto Alegre, Brasilien, neu gewählt wurde, gehören Vertreter/innen von Mitgliedskirchen des Rates wie auch der römisch-katholischen Kirche und mehrerer christlicher Einrichtungen an, die keine Vollmitglieder des ÖRK sind. Die Empfehlung, eine solche Konferenz im Jahr 2011 abzuhalten, wurde am 26. April zum Abschluss der Kommissionstagung in Genf unterbreitet und wird dem ÖRK-Zentralausschuss zur Beschlussfassung vorgelegt werden.
Die nächste Konferenz für Weltmission und Evangelisation wird eine Reihe repräsentativer Versammlungen fortsetzen, die 1910 mit der Weltmissionskonferenz in Edinburgh begonnen und bis hin zur jüngsten Weltmissionskonferenz des ÖRK 2005 in der Nähe Athens geführt hat. Viele Kirchenhistoriker sehen die in Edinburgh getroffene Entscheidung, einen Fortsetzungsausschuss zu bilden (der schließlich zur Einrichtung des Internationalen Missionsrats führte), als Ausgangspunkt der modernen ökumenischen Bewegung an.

DEERFIELD – Am Samstag, dem 12. Mai verlieh die Trinity International University (TIU) Präses Peter Strauch den Titel der theologischen Doktorwürde „Doctor of Divinity“ ehrenhalber. Die Ehrenpromotion fand in einem akademischen Festakt der US-amerikanischen Universität mit 250 Absolventen und rund 1.000 Gästen statt. Die Fakultät würdigte Strauchs Lebensleistung in seinen leitenden Funktionen als Vorsitzender der Evangelischen Allianz in Deutschland und als Präses des Bundes Freier evangelischer Gemeinden.
In seinen vielen literarischen Publikationen habe er sich stets für eine „transparente biblische Spiritualität“ in Verbindung mit einer „evangelistischen Leidenschaft“ eingesetzt. Dr. Gregory Waybright, Präsident der TIU, unterstrich Strauchs Leistung als Brückenbauer unter den deutschsprachigen Christen. Als „kraftvolle Stimme“ sei ihm eine vertiefte Zusammenarbeit im deutschen Evangelikalismus gelungen. Auch zahlreiche Lieder von Strauch gehörten heute zum festen Liedgut vieler Kirchen.

ROTTENBURG/STUTTGART – Zum zweiten Mal haben sich der Bischof der Diözese Rottenburg-Stuttgart, Gebhard Fürst, und Repräsentanten des Islam in Baden-Württemberg am Dienstagabend zum Gespräch getroffen. Bei der Begrüßung der Vertreter von sechs muslimischen Organisationen und der alewitischen Religionsgemeinschaft betonte Bischof Fürst seinen Wunsch einer Kontinuität dieser Begegnung, da Dialog und Austausch zwischen Christen und Muslimen für die Zukunft der Gesellschaft und des friedlichen Miteinander entscheidend seien.
Neben dem fachlichen Austausch seien dabei persönliches Kennenlernen und Vertrauen wichtige Elemente. Äußerungen der Wertschätzung des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils gegenüber dem Islam, auf die sich Bischof Fürst berief, seien „dem Brief eines Freundes vergleichbar, abgesandt in der Hoffnung, dass er auch von der anderen Seite eine Antwort bekommt“. Er betonte dabei den Wunsch, dass freie Religionsausübung auch in bestimmten muslimisch geprägten Gesellschaften und Staaten gelten müsse. Seinen muslimischen Gesprächspartnern stellte er die Frage, wie durchsetzungsfähig die demokratischen Kräfte des Islam gegenüber gewaltbereiten Personengruppen seien.

MAGDEBURG – (pbm) Wie ergeht es einem Katholiken in „Luthers Land“, noch dazu einem katholischen Bischof? Gerhard Feige, seit zwei Jahren Bischof des Bistums Magdeburg und gebürtiger Hallenser, hat seine Gedanken darüber zu Papier gebracht und mit Auszügen aus eigenen Grußworten, Predigten und anderen öffentlichen Äußerungen belegt. Unter der Überschrift „Katholisch im ´Lande Luthers´ – Befindlichkeiten, Reflexionen, Signale“ sind sie in die kürzlich erschienene Festschrift „Wider die Müdigkeit im ökumenischen Gespräch“ für den Leipziger evangelischen Theologieprofessor Ulrich Kühn eingegangen.
Kühn, 1932 gleichfalls in Halle geboren, gilt als Experte für Ökumene-Fragen und unterrichtete auch am Ökumene-Lehrstuhl der päpstlichen Universität Gregoriana in Rom. Kirche beginne für ihn nicht erst mit der Reformation, meint Kühn, „auch vor Luther haben Denker wie Thomas von Aquin Entscheidendes geleistet“. Mit Gerhard Feige verbindet den evangelischen Theologen seit vielen Jahren die gemeinsame Zugehörigkeit zu einem ökumenisch-theologischen Arbeitskreis, der von einem großen Respekt und einem tiefen Vertrauen geprägt ist.
