Tveit wurde vom Zentralausschuss auf dessen letzter Tagung im Sommer 2009 gewählt und trat sein Amt Anfang 2010 an.

KAIRO – Ein Besucher-Team aus dem Genfer Sekretariat des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) hatte die Ehre, am Samstag, dem 8. Januar 2011, in Kairo (Ägypten) von Papst Shenouda III. von der Koptischen Orthodoxen Kirche empfangen zu werden. Pastor Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, der Generalsekretär des ÖRK, reiste mit der Gruppe nach Kairo, um das Beileid der ökumenischen Gemeinschaft nach dem tödlichen Bombenangriff, der am Neujahrstag eine Kirche in Alexandria getroffen hatte, persönlich zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Tveit übermittelte Papst Shenouda das Mitgefühl und die Unterstützung der ÖRK-Mitgliedskirchen in dieser für Ägypten so schwierigen Zeit. Er versicherte, die Gemeinschaft der Kirchen, die gemeinsam den ÖRK bildeten, sei im Gebet für die Koptische Orthodoxe Kirche und das ganze ägyptische Volk vereint. GENF – Die Einheit der chinesischen Protestanten sei ein wesentlicher Grund für das rasche Wachstum der Kirche in China, erklärte der Generalsekretär des Chinesischen Christenrates, Pastor Kan Baoping, während eines Besuches im Ökumenischen Zentrum in Genf, Schweiz. Eine siebenköpfige Delegation mit hochrangigen Führungsverantwortlichen des Chinesischen Christenrates traf am Montag, 6. Dezember, den Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen (ÖRK) und weitere Mitarbeitende kirchlicher Organisationen mit Sitz im Ökumenischen Zentrum.
Es handelte sich um den vierten derartigen Besuch im ÖRK-Sekretariat seit der Gründung des postkonfessionellen Chinesischen Christenrates (CCC) 1980. Der letzte Besuch hatte im Jahr 2003 stattgefunden. Der CCC, der 2009 rund 19 Millionen Kirchenglieder zählte, war 1991 auf der Vollversammlung in Canberra als Mitglied im ÖRK offiziell aufgenommen und so mit der weltweiten Kirchengemeinschaft wieder vereint worden. Bei einem Runden Tisch, organisiert von der ÖRK-Kommission der Kirchen für Internationale Angelegenheiten, hielten die Delegationsmitglieder Vorträge zu drei Themen, die für Leben und Zeugnis der Kirche in China wesentlich sind – „Religionspolitik in China“, „Die Rolle der Religion bei der Förderung einer ‚harmonischen Gesellschaft’“ und „Die Rolle der Kirche im heutigen China“.
Mit Blick auf die Religionspolitik und die Beziehungen zwischen Kirche und Staat war sich die Delegation einig, dass derzeit eine „goldene Ära für die Entwicklung der Religionen in China“ angebrochen sei. Die Kirche in China wirke außerdem auf verschiedenen Wegen mit, um vor Ort eine „harmonische Gesellschaft“ zu fördern.
CCC-Generalsekretär Kan Baoping erklärte, dass religiöse Gemeinschaften allgemein und insbesondere die protestantische Kirche in den letzten 30 Jahren in China ein rasantes Wachstum erlebt hätten. Er sagte, die Überwindung konfessioneller Spaltungen sei einer der Gründe für diese Vitalität der Kirchen. Sie sei auch deshalb wichtig, weil die chinesische Kultur mehr Wert auf Gemeinsamkeiten lege als auf Unterschiede.

September in New York hat die Direktorin von “Brot für die Welt”, Pfarrerin Cornelia Füllkrug-Weitzel, an die Bundesregierung appelliert, ihr entwicklungspolitisches Handeln konsequent auf die Überwindung von Armut und Hunger auszurichten. “Deutschland hat – wie leider viele Regierungen – seine Versprechen zur Armutsbekämpfung von 2000 bisher nicht erfüllt”, kritisierte Füllkrug-Weitzel.
Die bereitgestellten Mittel der Bundesregierung lägen weit hinter den Zusagen, so die Theologin. Die Absicht, Entwicklungszusammenarbeit stärker an außenpolitischen und wirtschaftlichen Eigeninteressen Deutschlands auszurichten, sei das falsche Signal. “Diese Debatte kommt zur Unzeit, müsse doch jetzt die Kooperation der Staaten und die gemeinsame Verantwortung im Kampf gegen die Armut gestärkt werden”, betonte die Direktorin.
Dringend notwendig sei, bewährte internationale Finanzierungsinstrumente wie den Globalen Fonds zur Bekämpfung von Aids mit den erforderlichen Mitteln auszustatten. Die Vorsitzende des Rates der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland (EKD), Landesbischöfin Margot Käßmann und Bischof Martin Schindehütte, Leiter der Auslandsabteilung der EKD, haben in einem gemeinsamen Brief an den Patriarchen der Russischen Orthodoxen Kirche (ROK), Kirill I., zu Äußerungen von Vertretern des Außenamtes der ROK Stellung genommen. „Mit Verwunderung und großem Unverständnis“, so heißt es in dem Schreiben, nehme man zur Kenntnis, dass „einige Vertreter des Außenamtes der ROK“ die Wahlen der Synode der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland in Ulm in „unangemessener Weise“ kommentiert haben.
Die Ratsvorsitzende und Bischof Schindehütte stellen dazu fest, dass die unterschiedlichen Auffassungen „bezüglich des geistlichen Dienstes von Frauen in der Kirche Jesu Christi“ bisher „kein Hinderungsgrund für fruchtbare zwischenkirchliche Beziehungen auf bilateraler und multilateraler Ebene“ gewesen seien. Es sei vielmehr „ein christliches Gebot des gegenseitigen Respekts im geschwisterlichen Umgang, Unterschiede im Leben und Glauben unserer Kirchen auszuhalten und um den gemeinsamen Grund zu wissen, wie der Apostel Paulus an die Epheser schreibt: „,Ein Herr, ein Glaube, eine Taufe‘“, heißt es in dem Brief weiter.
Die „kürzlich eingetretene Entwicklung“ hingegen bedaure die EKD sehr. Das für den 30. November in Berlin geplante Treffen anlässlich der Feiern zum 50-jährigen Jubiläum des Dialoges zwischen EKD und ROK werde leider aufgrund der Absage von Erzbischof Hilarion nicht stattfinden können. Von Seiten der EKD aber, so das Schreiben weiter, sei man an der Fortsetzung des „wichtigen theologischen Dialogs über christliche Zentralfragen“ interessiert und zuversichtlich, dass dieser Dialog in Zukunft weitergeführt werde.
